Sports Fans or Horse Enthusiasts Get Ready!

Written by Sandy Navarre | Print | E-mail

The Kentucky Horse Park will host the World Equestrian Games (WEG) this year.  WEG, which runs from Sept. 25 through Oct. 10, serves as the world championships for all eight FEI sports:  dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, show jumping, para-dressage, reining and vaulting.  The games are held every four years, two years prior to the Olympics.

The Kentucky Horse Park was selected to host WEG five years ago and accelerated improvements to expanded facilities at the 1,224 acre park.  Recently completed upgrades include:

  • a new indoor arena with a 135 by 300 foot floor surrounded by 5,700 stadium seats and 200 suite seats
  • a warm-up barn and ring, high tech sound system and concession and exhibitor space
  • an outdoor stadium with 7,400 permanent seats and the capacity for 22,600 additional seats
  • a new three barn complex with climate control and 312 stalls for equine competitors which is attached to the new indoor arena by a covered walkway.

Plans for a park hotel did not come together but is in the works for the future.

Whether you're an Olympic fan or horse enthusiast, this might be a vacation spot for 2010.  The Horse Park houses a wide variety of horse breeds including miniatures.  Demonstrations of the different breeds are conducted throughout the day.  There are also two museums on the property along with other horse related activities.  For more information on the Kentucky Horse Park visit www.kyhorsepark.com/sub.php
